Digital Literacy Initiative

The Digital Literacy Initiative was launched in 2016 under the leadership of Julia Feerrar. She had a vision of using a framework to define digital literacy and center discussions about its use. We worked closely on how all the pieces fit together, and how best to represent the concepts to the Virginia Tech community.

 

After exploring dozens of initial ideas with a narrative flair, the final design was kept deliberately simple. We put the learner at the center, surround by core competencies, and overlapped by values. This framework graphic became the basis for further visual identity development and a wide range of materials to promote digital literacy and educate our community on how to use it.

Below samples include: workshop materials; Digital Literacy Symposium event materials; and other event materials.

Impact

This Digital Literacy framework has become a leading tool in digital literacy work and Julia Feerrar’s original article, “Development of a framework for digital literacy", Reference Services Review, has been downloaded over 2,000 times and has been included and cited in numerous other publications and presentations. https://doi.org/10.1108/RSR-01-2019-0002

The Digital Literacy team has taken the design vocabulary and created many new materials, including the highly anticipated Digital Literacy Toolkit created and designed by Kelsey Hammer (below). I had the pleasure of consulting on this project and was delighted to see how it built on and expanded the existing design foundation.
